Ainu Language Workshops for Children 子供向けアイヌ語ワークショップ

The workshops are led by tutors from Biratori Nibutani Ainu Language Class, an organization providing Ainu-language courses in the town of Biratori in southern Hokkaido, and give participants an opportunity to experience how children from the local Ainu community study the language of their ancestors in Japan today.

Biratori Nibutani Ainu Language Class offers classes for children twice a week. Students aged from three to 14 years old study the Ainu language through activities such as singing and practising Ainu dances, telling and listening to stories and folk tales and playing educational games. One Saturday a month, the language class is taken outside the classroom to learn about Ainu culture through outdoor activities in the mountains or by the Saru River, reconnecting with the landscape which has shaped Ainu culture for centuries.

The Ainu language, or aynuitak, is a language isolate with many regional variations, distinct from the Japanese language. Passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth, it has been crucial to the transmission of Ainu culture. It is listed as ‘Critically Endangered’ by the UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger. This means that while it is not yet extinct, as the last native speakers have died the language is kept alive through the efforts of those who are prepared to learn.

This event is a part of a series introducing various aspects of the Ainu language organized in conjunction with the exhibition Ainu Stories: Contemporary Lives by the Saru River on display in the Gallery at Japan House London from 16 November 2023 until 21 April 2024.
