A cry from Wajima: the impact of the Noto Peninsula New Year’s Day Earthquake on the lacquer industry

Speaker: Professor Simon Kaner (Executive Director, Sainsbury Institute)

About the Talk

For our February Third Thursday Lecture we will bring you a report and some responses to the January 1st earthquake, measuring 7.6 on the Japanese Meteorological Office scale, which devastated the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa prefecture, leading to the first major tsunami warning since the March 2011 Great East Japan disaster, and tragically leaving hundreds dead and many more injured. The Sainsbury Institute has many friends and research partners in the area, where many museums and the centre of the great urushi (lacquer) producing centre of Wajima were very badly affected. Our focus will be the impact on arts and cultures in the region.

We will announce further details of this talk soon.
