Hinohara Village

Doubtful Sound Theatre return to Barons Court theatre in the last week of February for a production of stories for the folktale, folk music, and Japanese culture lovers of London. This will be their sixth show of folktales from prefectures around Japan, this time focusing on a village out in the mountains of Tokyo that not many people have heard of – even those who live in Tokyo themselves!

In Hinohara Village, we meet three storytellers who live in the village, who pass along their renditions of stories they heard when they were growing up. These include two hairy ogre-women, a drunken carpenter with death on his face, a lucky spider, a necromantic cat, a local giant who likes to help build aqueducts, and a mask with a taste for blood.

Doubtful Sound is a bilingual theatre company from Tokyo now based in London. They research, translate, and perform traditional stories and folktales from far flung areas of Japan, and have performed them in ancient temples, at festivals, over rivers, in Japanese gardens, and at theatres in Japan and England.

Admission: £15 (£10 concession)
