Making Ainu Patterns: Embroidery

Get a first-hand experience of Ainu craft traditions in a series of workshops at Japan House London in which participants can learn sewing techniques to embroider Ainu patterns on a cotton coaster.

Distinct patterns can be found on Ainu textiles and woodwork, including clothes and utensils for both ceremonial and everyday use. Different regions may display different interpretations of basic Ainu patterns with names that are often taken from nature, such as ayus-noka (thorn-pattern), morew-noka (gentle swirl pattern), sik-noka (eye-pattern) and ram-ram-noka (fish scale pattern).

Some say that the patterns which appear on the collar, the back and the hems of Ainu robes are there to ward off evil; others say they are simply decorative. Textile patterns were passed down from mother to daughter, with young girls learning them by practising in the ashes of the hearth. While respecting basic pattern forms, there is freedom for craftspeople and artists within Ainu communities to expand and create new combinations of pattern.

During each workshop, participants can gain an understanding of the characteristics and history of Ainu designs while learning sewing techniques to embroider a beautiful Ainu motif on a cotton coaster which can be taken home.

The workshops are led by the Nibutani Craft Cooperative Association, one of the leading Ainu crafts associations in Hokkaido which is comprised mainly of craftspeople based in Nibutani.
The workshop is part of a programme of events connected to the exhibition Ainu Stories: Contemporary Lives by the Saru River on display in the Gallery at Japan House London from 16 November 2023 until 21 April 2024.

Please be informed that participants must be over 10 years old to attend the workshop and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Please note that filming and/or photography may take place at this event.
