Film screening: Mothra vs Godzilla

Widely regarded as one of the best Godzilla sequels, Mothra vs Godzilla is the second instalment in A Roaring 70th: Godzilla Film Season.

Released in 1964 as the fourth film in the developing Godzilla franchise, the film pits Godzilla against another signature monster from producers Toho: the moth monster-deity Mothra. After a typhoon washes Mothra’s egg out to sea, it comes ashore in Japan, where two cruel businessmen aim to exploit it for a theme park. Godzilla has also been swept from the sea back to Japan by the typhoon, and after causing mass destruction around Nagoya, humanity appeals to Mothra to stop Godzilla.

Featuring Godzilla’s last Showa-series (1954-1984) appearance as an out-and-out villain, Mothra vs Godzilla demonstrates the technical advances in kaijūeiga(monster films) of the time through its new iteration of Mothra. Brought to life through intricate wirework. Mothra’s feelers and antennae wriggle, the legs move about, the wings flap as if effortlessly and the head tilts in all directions – while its adversary Godzilla is leaner and meaner than ever before.

With original Godzilla (1954) director Honda Ishirō again returning, Mothra vs Godzilla is one of the most entertaining monster films of its era. It also finds time to explore serious themes, such as collective action for common survival, the need for cooperation among nations to solve challenges facing the planet, and criticism of the galloping capitalism in the wake of Japan’s postwar economic boom.
