In Japan, transport has been a catalyst for many other industries, and is the backbone of the economy. Japanese vehicles, such as cars, trains and the Shinkansen (‘bullet’ train lines) have earned global acclaim for their sophistication and design and are exported all around the world.
Within Japan, the transport industry has had a profound impact on customs, culture and art. Amid the post-war economic boom, new forms of transport gained popularity through the media, became objects of desire, and emerged as icons of their times. Japan’s highly developed transport network, which moves people around with pinpoint accuracy, has become part of its everyday landscape. Yet, these vehicles are more than just means of travel: they also serve as highly customizable ways for expressing individuality, be that dekotora or bosozoku.
