The Japanese word ‘futon’ indicates a complete bedding set, including a mattress and duvet, both of which are foldable, making them easy to store after use.
This event is led by Niwa Takuya, a 5th-generation futon maker at family business Niwa Futon based in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. Niwa introduces the origins of the futon, how they are made by hand, using locally sourced fabrics and their present-day role and value compared to contemporary machine-made bedding.
Following the presentation, Niwa will demonstrate the making of zabuton, a smaller version of a futon padded mattress that functions as a cushion.
The event starts at 18:30 and last for around 1 hour 15 minutes.
Niwa will also lead zabuton workshops on 15 and 16 November and demonstrate the making of futonon 17 November. Check the What’s On page for details.
