Godzilla Minus One

The series A Roaring 70th: Godzilla Film Season brings us right up to date with this screening of 2023’s Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One.

In a departure from the style of the more flamboyant kaiju(monster) films shown elsewhere in this series, Godzilla Minus One is – as well as a visual spectacle – a sobering study of Japan’s situation in the immediate aftermath of World War II. It explores complex human characters and themes of grief, loss, guilt and sacrifice.

The title of the film refers to the idea that Japan had reached a state of zero in 1946 as its people struggled to recover following the end of World War II. Things get even worse (or ‘minus one’) when Godzilla emerges from the ocean in all its monstrosity to bring further destruction. Godzilla is more imposing than ever, rampaging around Tokyo, flattening buildings and effortlessly lifting and chewing train cars. It falls to former kamikaze pilot Shikishima Kōichi to lead resistance to the monster, while still being haunted by the painful memories of war.

This screening is complimented by an exclusive online talk event with Godzilla Minus One producer, Yamada Kenji on the same day. Check the What’s On page for details.

Godzilla Minus One became the first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2024.
