The making of Godzilla Minus One: In conversation with producer Yamada Kenji

Join film producer Yamada Kenji for a lunchtime talk as he discusses the making of Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, ahead of a screening at Japan House London later that day.

Yamada shares insight into how the iconic monster was brought to life behind the scenes, how he recreated post-war Tokyo and his involvement in the Academy Awards campaign. He will also discuss his role in other films and series including the critically acclaimed MONSTER and The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House for Netflix, both directed by Koreeda Hirokazu.

About Yamada Kenji

Born in 1979 in Saitama, Yamada graduated from Keio University before joining TV Asahi and working as a film and TV producer for over 10 years. He has produced numerous films and TV series. He is a two-time winner of the Tokyo Drama Awards as well as a three-time winner of the Galaxy Awards. Since joined Toho in April 2019 Yamada Kenji has worked as a producer and an associate manager of the planning and production department. He produced the Netflix series The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, written and directed by Koreeda Hirokazu, and A Hundred Flowers which was the first Japanese film to win the Silver Shell for Best Director at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. He also produced Koreeda Hirokazu’s latest film MONSTER which won the Best Screenplay and the Queer Palm at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Godzilla Minus One is Yamada Kenji’s latest work.
