Create your own set of handcrafted chopsticks in this special workshop led by Kubo Masayuki, a carpenter at the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum in Hyōgo, Japan.
During the workshop, participants learn how to use a kanna (Japanese plane) to shape and smooth a set of chopsticks made from hinoki cypress – a Japanese wood prized for its beautiful surface, durability, ease of processing, and elegant fragrance.
The workshops are part of a programme of events surrounding the exhibition The Craft of Carpentry: Drawing Life from Japan’s Forests which runs in the Gallery at Japan House London from 12 March until 6 July 2025.
Please note: Walnut oil is used in this workshop to finish the chopsticks. If you have a nut allergy, please inform a member of staff before the session.
Tickets for the event are non-refundable. Please read our Terms and Conditions for Event Ticketsbefore purchasing your ticket.
Participants must be over18years old to take part in this workshop.
Please note that filming and photography may take place at this event. Photos and footage of the event may then be used to promote Japan House London, helping more people to discover what we offer. If you have any concerns, please contact us online or contact a member of the team on site.
