Take a journey through the world of Japanese carpentry in this gallery tour led by Nishiyama Marcelo, the curator ofThe Craft of Carpentry: Drawing Life from Japan’s Forests.
The tour explores key themes of the exhibition, including the craftsmanship of temple and shrine carpenters (dōmiyadaiku) and the refined techniques of teahouse carpenters (sukiyadaiku), offering guests an opportunity to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Japanese woodworking traditions.
The tour takes a closer look into the highly specialized carpentry tools on display in the Gallery, allowing guests to discover their functions and marvel at the ingenuity of their design. Guests will also learn more about joinery techniques (kigumi) which provide excellent examples of the precision and expert woodworking skills of Japanese carpenters.
The tour also offers insights into the curatorial process and how the exhibition came together. Questions are encouraged.

The exhibition The Craft of Carpentry: Drawing Life from Japan’s Forests is on display in the Gallery at Japan House London from 12 March until 6 July 2025.

Nishiyama Marcelo is a curator specializing in architectural history and design at the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum. He has curated an array of exhibitions based on research in the field of building technology. His work covers a wide range of subjects, including carpentry and tools, blade making and the art of sakan (Japanese plasterwork), as well as modern building techniques such as cross-laminated timber (CLT). He has recently curated exhibitions at the Manggha Museum (Poland) and the Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris (France).
