Kigumi House. Carpenter Akinori Abo Building Houses

Join us at Japan House London for a free screening of the documentary Kigumi House. AkinoriAbo Building Houses organized in conjunction with the exhibition The Craft of Carpentry: Drawing Life from Japan’s Forests – Japan House London.

The documentary features the entire process of building a timber frame house from the initial conversations with the investors, through the design, material processing and construction work to the completion of the project. The camera follows master carpenter Abo Akinori as he builds a house for a multigenerational family. Viewers are offered a glimpse into Abo’s workshop where the frame of the house and elements of the interior design such as fusuma (sliding doors) and furniture are made with great precision and attention to detail.

Abo’s conversation with his apprentices during lunch breaks at the construction site and interviews present his philosophy and approach to architecture and carpentry traditions. The documentary also provides a clear introduction to the principles of wood joinery and the structure of timber frame houses.

The screenings are in Japanese with English subtitles. Duration: approx.92 mins.

Guests who are booked to attend the screening can also enjoy 10% off drinks at The Stand on their way in.

Please note that filming and photography may take place at this event. Photos and footage of the event may then be used to promote Japan House London, helping more people to discover what we offer. If you have any concerns, please contact us online or contact a member of the team on site.
