Step into a life-size reconstruction of a Japanese tea house as part of this full chadō experience.
Discover the Japanese Way of Tea through a matcha-making demonstration and tasting, culminating in a visit to the reconstruction of the Sa-an teahouse on display at Japan House London, faithfully reproduced from the original found at the temple Daitoku-ji in Kyoto. This special event is held in collaboration with Urasenke chadō practitioners from Tankokai UK.
Chadō boasts more than 400 years of history with many practitioners not only in Japan but all over the world. Considered a way to socialize, this act of preparing and serving matcha tea to guests is a practice that involves deep attention to isolated movements and gestures, an appreciation of the craft objects involved and how they are used in the process, and an awareness of the surrounding environment.
This event starts in the Hall with an introduction and chadō demonstration, allowing guests to gain a better understanding of the values and significance of the Way of Tea. After the demonstrations, guests divide into two groups.
The first group is served a bowl of rich and foamy matcha tea accompanied with wagashi sweets carefully selected according to the season. A member of Tankokai UK then provides an insight into the etiquette of tea gatherings and information about utensils such as tea bowls, kuromoji sticks and kaishi paper. The tastings are conducted in a casual, relaxed atmosphere and questions are encouraged.
Meanwhile, the other group is led to The Craft of Carpentry exhibition in the Gallery and given an exclusive tour of the structural model of the Sa-an teahouse. Participants can enter the teahouse to fully appreciate its features and learn how the architecture and materials used in the teahouse design correspond with the aesthetics and values of chadō. Then the groups swap to enjoy their respective activities.
This event accompanies The Craft of Carpentry: Drawing Life from Japan’s Forests on display in the Gallery from 12 March to 6 July 2025.
