MATSUMOTO Life in Frames

The film depicts the 8 mm film footage recorded by citizens from the 1950s to the 1980s and the process of recovering forgotten local history and creating opportunities for people of multiple generations to reconnect through the rediscovery of film footage.

Although the film is set in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, it has been shown in more than 50 locations in and around the city, including Tokyo, on various scales, and has brought deep empathy and emotion to the hearts of people regardless of where they live.

Two of Japan's leading film directors (Hirokazu Kore-eda and Takashi Yamazaki) have also commented on the project.

The record of everyday life, which would otherwise disappear, can now be unearthed, digitised and filmed more than half a century later, and connected to the future. Records of townscapes and buildings that can no longer be seen are extremely valuable, and family records have the power to revive family ties and hearts that have once been separated.

We are honoured to have this opportunity to show this film, which is full of potential for community regeneration, in a place where the spirit of respect for the good old things runs through the veins.

We look forward to seeing you at the theatre.
