Summer Calligraphy Workshop: Make Your Own Sensu - Folded Fan

With summer approaching, why not join our calligraphy workshop to make your own folding fan (sensu 扇子) led by London-based calligrapher Yoko Takenami?

In this workshop, participants will learn to write seasonal phrases in Japanese characters, which will be arranged on a sensu that you can take home. You will explore various styles of Japanese writing, including both kanji and kana, and learn the basic skills of calligraphy tools such as ink and brush. By the end of the workshop, you'll have created something unique and personal. This is a fantastic opportunity to begin your calligraphy journey under the guidance of an experienced professional. No prior experience is needed for this workshop.

Yoko Takenami started her calligraphy studies at the age of seven. Educated in Japan and in Ohio, US, she qualified as a master of calligraphy in 1990. Yoko now lives in London and teaches calligraphy at various institutions such as British Library while also working as an interpreter. She regularly returns to Japan for inspiration for her calligraphy and tuition from her Teshinkai Master. Yoko is the author of The Simple Art of Japanese Calligraphy.
