Behind every sumo bout lies the essential work of the yobidashi, the ring attendants and announcers who also construct thedohyō, the clay ring at the heart of every match. Discover their crucial work in this special event presented by sumo commentator and presenter Hiro Morita.
Shigeo, a veteran yobidashi, reveals the duties and skills that define his profession, from calling wrestlers to the ring and taiko drumming to carefully building the dohyōfor each tournament.
Joining him isrikishi (wrestler) ŌhōKōnosuke, who shares first-hand insights into life as a professional wrestler, including daily training, preparation for matches and the collaboration with yobidashi that keeps the sport running smoothly.
The discussion concludes with an opportunity for questions from the audience.

About the speakers
ŌhōKōnosuke
Ōhō Kōnosuke (born Naya Kōnosuke in 2000 in Tokyo) is a rising sumo star from the Ōtake stable. He made his professional debut in January 2018, reached the top division, makuuchi, in January 2022, and achieved his highest rank, sekiwake, in March 2025. He is a third-generation wrestler, the son of former sekiwake Takatōriki and the grandson of the 48th yokozuna Taihō.
Shigeo
Shigeo is a professional yobidashi employed by the Japan Sumo Association. Born Taniguchi Takumi in 1966 in Shiga Prefecture, he belongs to the Kokonoe stable, making his professional debut in May 1981. He reached the sanyaku rank in November 2014.
Hiro Morita
Born in Tokyo in 1967, Hiro Morita is an announcer and presenter affiliated with both NHK and the Japan Sumo Association. Since 1999, he has provided live play-by-play commentary on NHK’s sumo broadcasts and is also host of NHK World-Japan’s Grand Sumo Preview and Grand Sumo Highlights. In 2022, he launched and continues to host the Japan Sumo Association’s English-language YouTube channel Sumo Prime Time.
