Still from Profound Desires of the Gods (1968)

Profound Desires of the Gods

The fourth film in the film season A restless curiosity about human nature depicts the clash between the mythic ways of remote islanders and modernization.

Profound Desires of the Gods was released in 1968 as Imamura’s first colour film, following six years of planning and two years of filming. Initially a costly box-office flop, it is now considered one of Imamura’s most fascinating works.

Set on the fictional Kurage Island, where primitive agriculture and folk beliefs still shape daily life, the story follows the Futori family who are ostracized for incest – an act the villagers believe has provoked the spirits’ wrath and brought about disaster. The family becomes caught between external pressures of modernization and the island’s longstanding customs. Profound Desires of the God ambitiously portrays their struggles, delving into themes of life, desire and sexuality. At nearly three hours long, the film is comparable in its running time as it was in its making.
