On 14 March Messums West will host our 10th annual ceramic focused symposium to mark the launch day of the exhibition Yakimono: a culture of exchange. We begin the day with a fascinating demo by world renowned ceramicist Makoto Kagoshima. Makoto will show us his unique handpainting technique on to ceramic, followed by a chance to ask him questions.
The afternoon continues with speakers presenting a series of talks on the exhibition theme. Leading authorities will include internationally renowned art and design historian Professor Paul Greenhalgh, author of Ceramic: Art and Civilisation and Professor Simon Kaner, Executive Director, Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures. The session concludes with a talk on the work of Leach Pottery and their continued links with Japan from their Director Libby Buckley.
