China’s First Comprehensive Cinematic Portrait of the Spiritual World of Kūkai —
The Epic Documentary "Kūkai"
A Fearless Voyage Across Seas, A Boundless Awakening of All Beings
KŪKAI is the first Chinese documentary to portray the life of Japanese Buddhist master Kūkai. Directed by LIU Yue in her feature debut and realised through crowdfunding, the film traces the cultural roots of Kūkai's legacy and recreates the vibrant exchange of civilisations that defined the Tang Dynasty — an era of extraordinary openness in which ideas, faith, and art flowed freely across borders. Bold in form and deeply felt, the film brings to life a presence that transcends time: "purity of heart," "compassion for all beings," "selflessness and altruism," and "boundless vows and practice."
Awards & Nominations
Since 2025, KŪKAI has earned worldwide recognition, capturing eight international awards, including Best Documentary at the London Independent Film Awards, and securing official selections in over twenty international film festival categories. Highlights include the Las Vegas International Film and Screenwriting Festival (Faith Category), the Girona Film Festival (Feature Category), the Abuja International Film Festival (Feature Section), and the Lift-Off Global Network (Best New Filmmaker Section).
