On the Brink – Turning Points in Cinema

To celebrate Regent Street Cinema 130th year anniversary they are partnering with the University of Westminster to create a world cinema weekend. The event titled On the Brink – Turning Points in Cinema, showing films that come from moments when cinema and society were changing.The event will begin on the 10th of April with the celebration of Japanese cinema, particularly post war Japanese cinema.

The film selected for the is Kenji Mizoguchi’s Ugetsu (1953). The screening will then be followed by a Q and A with Dr Irene González-López a Japanese Studies professor and co-editor of Tanaka Kinuyo: Nation, Stardom and Female Subjectivity (Edinburgh University Press, 2018). 

The event has been designed to educate students about the importance and significance of Japanese cinema, and its overall impact on the cinematic landscape.
