Still from The Loyal 47 Ronin (1958)

The Loyal 47 Ronin

The third film of the Samurai on screen season is The Loyal 47 Ronin, also known as Chūshingura and is based on one of the most beloved true samurai stories in Japan. In 1703, 47 samurai resolved to avenge the death of their former lord, knowing this would mean certain death, either in a raid, or by dishonourable execution or by order of seppuku afterwards. The fictionalized account in The Loyal 47 Ronin goes beyond a mere revenge drama, epitomizing the spirit of bushidō: loyalty, honour, bonds of comradeship and self-sacrifice.

Directed by Watanabe Kunio, known as a master of numerous popular entertainment films, The Loyal 47 Ronin features a star-studded cast including Hasegawa Kazuo and Ichikawa Raizō – superstars from the golden age of Japanese cinema – alongside legendary actress Kyō Machiko. It is widely regarded as the greatest of dozens of Chūshingura films.

As the raid took place at the end of the year, Chūshingura has since become a cherished Japanese year-end tradition and inspired various interpretations, including kabuki, novels, TV programmes and films.

The screenings are in Japanese with English subtitles. Duration: approx. 166 mins
