AI in Education

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly integrated into everyday education, influencing both teaching and learning practices. Beyond the classroom, AI is also reshaping the broader educational system and landscape by affecting curriculum design, assessment methods, teacher training, and even institutional decision-making.

In this webinar, Associate Professor Lui Yoshida of the University of Tokyo will discuss the current state of generative AI adoption in Japan’s educational landscape. He will explore how teachers are navigating the challenges that have emerged alongside tools such as ChatGPT, and share his perspective on the future direction of AI integration in education. Carla Aerts, former Director of Futures at UCL’s Institute of Education and Global Digital Director at Cambridge University Press, will discuss the current state of AI in education in the UK. She will explore its possibilities and challenges, as well as how AI can contribute to personalised and immersive learning, support neurodiversity, and shape the future of education.

Andreas Schleicher (moderator)

Andreas Schleicher is Director for Education and Skills at the OECD. He initiated and oversees the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and other international instruments that have created a global platform for policy-makers, researchers and educators across nations and cultures to innovate and transform educational policies and practices. He has worked for over 20 years with ministers and education leaders to improve education. Former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said that Schleicher “understands the global issues and challenges as well as or better than anyone I’ve met, and he tells me the truth”. Former UK Secretary of State Michael Gove called Schleicher “the most important man in English education” – even though he is German and lives in France. He is the recipient of numerous honours and awards, including the “Theodor Heuss” prize, awarded in the name of the first president of the Federal Republic of Germany for “exemplary democratic engagement”.  He holds an honorary Professorship at the University of Heidelberg.

Lui Yoshida

Lui Yoshida is an Associate Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo. Specializes in educational technology, generative AI, active learning, online learning, and faculty development. After serving as a Project Assistant Professor at the University of Tokyo’s College of Arts and Sciences and a Project Lecturer at the University of Tokyo’s Center for Integrated Education and Research, assumed current position in 2020. Translations and publications include Handbook of Learning Assessment: 50 Techniques to Promote Active Learning (co-translated) and The Book for Teachers to Become the Teacher They Want to Be (co-authored). Since fiscal year 2023, served as a School Strategic DX Advisor for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), delivering lectures and training sessions for various boards of education. In fiscal year 2024, served as a member of the “Study Group on the Utilization of Generative AI in Elementary and Secondary Education” and contributed to the revision of the “Guidelines for the Util.

Carla Aerts

Carla Aerts is a leading international interdisciplinarian at the intersection of education, innovation and emerging technologies. Carla is reshaping our thinking about learning and education futures. Former Director of Futures at UCL’s Institute of Education and Global Digital Director at Cambridge University Press – Education, she was asked to lead on the formation of the Tmrw Institute, an interdisciplinary Learning with Technologies for the Future of Education think tank. She is an advisor to Cambridge University Hughes Hall’s Digital Education Futures Initiative (DEFI) and has worked with over 150 startups worldwide. Her recent paper, “Challenging Hyper-personalization: Towards (Re-)Socializing learning in Human-to-Human-to-Machine Dialogue,” features in UNESCO’s Digital Learning Week publication on AI’s educational disruptions.
