TheSamurai on screen season concludes with Three Outlaw Samurai, in which three wandering samurai battle corrupt magistrates who are oppressing peasants.
The film, directed by Gosha Hideo, is an adaptation of the hugely popular TV period drama series of the same name (which ran for over 150 episodes from 1963–1969).
Each of the three solitary (yet righteous) characters are highly layered, creating a captivating interplay between them as they strive towards a common goal. It stars Tamba Tetsurō, who appeared in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice, Hira Mikijirō, one of Japan’s leading actors on both screen and stage, and Nagato Isamu, a character actor with a background in comedy.
Deeply influenced by director Kurosawa Akira, who introduced sound-effects for sword fighting in Yōjimbō (1961) for the first time, Gosha sought to make the sound effects such as the clang of blades clashing and the swish of a sword cutting through the air even more thorough and realistic. In Three Outlaw Samurai, Gosha created these fast-paced, dynamic chanbara (sword-fighting) scenes that revolutionized the history of Japanese period drama.
The screenings are in Japanese with English subtitles. Duration: approx. 94 mins.
