Addressing the Challenges for the Japanese Economy: Hiromi Yamaji in conversation with Greg Clark

After our very successful event on 29 June 2023, we are delighted to welcome Hiromi Yamaji, Group CEO of the Japan Exchange Group, back to The Japan Society to share his latest assessment of the Japanese economy, especially the evolving market and the impact of corporate governance reform.

Following initial remarks from Hiromi Yamaji, he will be joined in conversation by The Japan Society Chair The Rt Hon Greg Clark, with additional questions from the audience.

Ten years have passed since the introduction of the Corporate Governance Code in 2015, and Japan's corporate governance reform is making visible progress. A significant increase in the number of M&As, TOBs, and other corporate actions suggests that Japan Inc.'s mindset is changing, with the aim of achieving higher growth. Mr. Hiromi Yamaji will provide an overview of the future development of the reform, including the third revision of the Corporate Governance Code and the Tokyo Stock Exchange's (TSE) request for capital efficiency and share price.

Hiromi Yamaji is Group CEO of Japan Exchange Group, Inc. He joined the group in June 2013 as CEO of Osaka Exchange Inc, then was appointed as CEO of Tokyo Stock Exchange Inc in April 2021. Before joining the group, he served as Executive Vice President and Head of Global Investment Banking at Nomura Securities Co., Ltd. During his career at Nomura, he served as CEO and Chairman of its overseas affiliates He graduated from Kyoto University and holds an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
