Join ourTankō Bushi performance group and learn one of Japan’s best-known Bon dances through two dedicated practice sessions, culminating in a public performance at Japan Matsuri in Trafalgar Square onSunday 4 October 2026.

Bon dance is a central part of Obon, one of Japan’s most important annual festivals. Typically held in mid-August, Obon is a time when the spirits of the deceased are believed to return to visit their loved ones. Across Japan, communities gather in parks, temple and shrine grounds, and public squares to dance together in celebration, often wearing summer yukata and moving in circles to lively music.

Bon dance traditions vary across Japan, with each region having its own distinctive dances and music. This workshop focuses on Tankō Bushi, which originated in the coal-mining communities of Tagawa in Fukuoka Prefecture. The dance’s movements are inspired by the work of miners, from shovelling coal to pushing mine carts.

This programme is open to everyone, including complete beginners, and no previous dance experience is required. Participants will learn the dance together over two practice sessions before performing as a group at Japan Matsuri. We anticipate around 25 participants will take part in the performance, although final numbers will depend on bookings.

Further information about the Japan Matsuri performance, including meeting arrangements, timings and other practical details, will be sent closer to the event date.

Separate standalone workshops are also available for those who would like to learn the dance without taking part in the performance.

This event series is organized in collaboration with the Japan Association in the UK, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and forms part of a wider programme at Japan House London highlighting Japanese communities in the UK.

The workshops are inspired by Iwane Ai’s Kipuka series, featured in the Kyotographieexhibition, which explores the lives and Obon celebrations of Japanese communities in Hawaii.

About the instructor:

Sugiyama Akiko was born in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, and has lived in the UK for over 20 years. She trained in the Onoe school of Nihon Buyō (Japanese dance) and holds the Natori certification. She has delivered Japanese dance workshops at schools and cultural events in the UK introducing Japanese culture through dance in an engaging and accessible way.

The Japan Association in the UK (JA) was established in November 1996 with the aim of fostering a sense of community and providing mutual support for the growing number of Japanese residents in the UK. Officially registered as a charity in January 2012, the organisation promotes friendship, volunteerism and community welfare, while fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and the UK through a range of social, cultural and educational activities. In 2026, the JA celebrates its 30th anniversary.
