Japan House London is delighted to present a new film season dedicated to Suzuki Seijun, one of the most original and influential figures in Japanese cinema.
Celebrated for his bold visual imagination, striking use of colour, inventive art direction and unconventional storytelling, Suzuki continually pushed the boundaries of cinematic expression. His films from the 1960s were often regarded as too radical by the Japanese film industry of the time, yet later gained international acclaim and influenced directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Jim Jarmusch and John Woo.
This season explores two defining phases of Suzuki’s career through five key works: the groundbreaking 1960s films Tokyo Drifter, Fighting Elegy and Branded to Kill, alongside Zigeunerweisen and Kagero-za, key works from the acclaimed Taishō Trilogy, in which Suzuki’s hallucinatory imagination and mature artistic vision found some of their most complete expression.
The schedule of screenings is:
Sunday 11 and Thursday 22 October 2026 – Tokyo Drifter (1966)
Sunday 22 and Wednesday 25 November 2026 – Fighting Elegy (1966)
Sunday 13 and Wednesday 16 December 2026 – Branded to Kill (1967)
Sunday 10 and Wednesday 27 January 2027 – Zigeunerweisen (1980)
Sunday 14 and Wednesday 24 February 2027 – Kagero-za (1981)
The films and screening dates may be subject to change due to external circumstances.
For The maverick visionary: the cinematic world of Suzuki Seijun, Japan House London will change a small entry fee of £5 per person. This is to cover the increasing cost of hosting film screenings and to help Japan House London maintain the quality and variety of the films it presents.
The screenings are in Japanese with English subtitles.
Guests who are booked to attend the screening can also enjoy 10% off drinks at the Stand on their way in. Please note that the Stand is open until 20:00, Monday–Saturday, and until 18:00 on Sundays.
