Wisdom for Life — Japanese Poetry from Oxford to Tokyo
30–31 October 2026 | Oxford

What happens when words written in a Japanese care setting are encountered as poetry by readers in Britain?

Wisdom for Life introduces the haiku, writings and drawings of Takao Kaneko, a Japanese poet based at Kobo-Syu in Saitama.

Translated into English by Dr Laurence Mann of the University of Oxford, Kaneko's work captures the humour, warmth and surprising wisdom of everyday life.

Two events, at Kellogg College and Curio Books + Culture, will bring together Japanese and British participants for readings, talks and discussion, with Kaneko joining live from Tokyo.

Presented by Art of the Rough Diamonds, with support from the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.
