400 years of Japanese music: the koto and its friends

JAPANESE MUSIC CONCERT featuring koto, shamisen, shakuhachi and viola, Monday 4 March, 8pm, SOAS, Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre. FREE ENTRY (but advisable to email dh6@soas.ac.uk to ensure a seat)
Toshiko YONEKAWA (koto 13-string zither) is from a family lineage of koto masters (her mother was a Living National Treasure). She has performed in over 15 countries as a Japan Cultural Envoy for the Agency of Cultural Affairs.
She plays pieces from the 17th century onwards, and has composed new pieces, including one for koto and viola that will be heard at this concert. Also performing: Mari KAMEGAWA (shamisen 3-string lute), Clive BELL (shakuhachi bamboo flute), & Wenhan JIANG (viola).

Toshiko YONEKAWA will offer an introduction to the koto on Wednesday 6 March, 8pm, SOAS: a mini-lecture-demonstration including a chance for a brief hands-on experience. FREE ENTRY (but advisable to email dh6@soas.ac.uk to ensure a seat)
