Gill Wing Jewellery celebrates Japanese design in their new exhibition “Fragments of Japan” in their Islington gallery on Upper Street, from 2nd May until 14th June. Sculptural brooches and unique earrings by three female Japanese jewellers are amongst the highly collectable and wearable art pieces in this special showcase set amongst the curated selection of contemporary jewellery to discover at Gill Wing.
“Fragments of Japan” features three leading female craftswomen; Miki Asai, Mariko Sumioka and Kayo Saito, each selected to exemplify the sublime skills and harmonious aesthetic found in Japanese design. These makers studied in the United Kingdom during their career, but retained the essence of Japanese design with resounding echoes of nature and balance within their individual style.
Demonstrating a range of meticulous and intensive techniques these masters of their craft incorporate traditional goldsmithing in precious metal with colour and texture through patination and micro-mosaic of delicate shell. Fleeting moments and joyful memories are captured in the details of weathered roof tiles, branches and petals, contemplating the transient beauty of nature in “Fragments of Japan”. Find peace in the art of jewellery making in a celebration of Japanese craft excellence in this new exhibition at Gill Wing Jewellery from May 2nd until the 14th of June.
