Third Thursday Lectures: Manga at the British Museum

Professor Nicole Coolidge Rousmaniere
Sainsbury Institute & British Museum

About the Talk

This talk gives a behind the scenes look at the creating of The Citi exhibition Manga マンガ (23 May to 26 August 2019) currently on display in the Sainsbury Exhibition Gallery at the British Museum. Manga is a visual form of narrative storytelling that employs the power of line to literally draw the reader into the story. Manga’s roots are international, but the form as we know it today developed in Japan from the late 19th through to the 20th centuries and has recently achieved global reach. Incorporating both domestic Japanese and related international forms, comprising some 50 manga artists, 70 titles and 162 works from historical art to digital experiments and 3D expression, this exhibition brings together the most important examples of manga both past and present, while pointing to the future of this compelling and accessible medium.
