KabukiMA is a theatre troupe committed to spreading Japanese theatre to Western audiences. We intend to perform a rendition of the 17th century Kabuki play entitled "Narukami" at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for a week this August. “Narukami” is a household classic of the Kabuki repertoire which recounts the tale of a princess’s quest to free the dragon god of rain who has been imprisoned in a cave by a monk (Narukami), who is bent on keeping the god for himself. We will be performing in traditional Japanese costume, wearing authentic Kabuki make-up and showcasing the Japanese dance training we have received from 100-year-old grand master Fujima Kansuma Sensei. Nevertheless, the show will be in English so as to appeal to and connect with a British audience.
