The Japan Society is pleased to offer a small group of members the opportunity to enjoy afternoon tea and a chat with director Naoko Nobutomo, before the Japan Foundation screening and Q&A of her documentary I Go Gaga, My Dear (2018). Join us for this special opportunity to talk about crucial topics in contemporary Japan such as aging and Alzheimer's with a Japanese female director.
Naoko Nobutomo is a Japanese film and television director. She was born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1961 and graduated from the Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo in 1984. She has been involved in documentary productions since 1986 when she started working for Fuji TV, making programmes dealing with social issues such as the North Korean abductions of Japanese citizens, young-onset dementia and the so-called “internet café refugees”. I Go Gaga, My Dear is her first film to be theatrically released. In this personal documentary, Nobumoto depicts the everyday routine of her 85-year-old mother and 93-year-old father, who live alone in their home, and the development of her mother’s Alzheimer’s.
