Engelbert Kaempfer: Observer and Collector in 17th-century Japan

A Lunchtime Curator Talk

Kaempfer, a German physician, traveller and naturalist, spent two years in Japan 1690-1692. The books, manuscripts and maps he acquired formed the basis for his History of Japan and became the foundation of the British Library’s Japanese collection. Hamish Todd, Head of East Asian Collections, introduces this remarkable man and his collections.
