The Ministry of Foreign Affairs invites young Europeans for a two-week study tour of Japan in two groups, to take place around October-November 2004. Applicants are expected to make a contribution to future Japan-European relations.
The object of the tour is, in the short term, to inspire an interest in Japan by experiencing many aspects of the country (i.e. politics, economy, culture, society etc.) It is hoped that in the longer term, the applicants' understanding of Japan will help to strengthen future ties between Japan and European countries.
1. Outline of the tour
(1) Content of Study (plan)
(a) Observing cultural, economic and political aspects of Japan from both traditional and modern viewpoints through lectures, visits and learning experiences.
(b) Opinion exchange with Japanese youth.
(c) Extensive travel around the country.
(d) A short stay with a host family.
(2) Duration (plan)
(a) Group A: 2 weeks from 11 October 2004 (Mon) (departure)
(b) Group B: 2 weeks from 25 October 2004 (Mon) (departure)
(3) Number of Participants: Total of 60 Persons in both the above groups
2. Application Requirements
Applicants are required to meet the following requirements:
(1) Nationals of the following countries:
Andorra (apply to Japanese Embassy in France), Austria, Belgium, Cyprus (apply to Embassy in Greece), Denmark, Estonia, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein (apply to Embassy in Switzerland), Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta (apply to Embassy in Italy), Monaco (apply to Embassy in France), the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino (apply to Embassy in Italy), Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, the United Kingdom, EU*
* ��צU applicants�ߡ�are limited to fonctionnaires and stagiaires of the EU Institutions ? European Commission, Council of the EU, European Parliament etc.- with the nationality of the 25 Member States and acceding countries under negotiation (Bulgaria and Romania). These applicants are requested to send their applications to the Mission of Japan at the European Union in Brussels.
(2) Aged 18-32 as of June 2004
(3) Others
(a) Applicants must never have been to Japan before and should have no concrete plan to go there in the near future.
(b) Applicants are expected to be flexible, sociable and well suited to group activities for the Tour.

Please include a CV, covering letter and a short essay (1 side of A4, single spaced) in English on "Japan's role in the international community"

(2) Non-British nationals
Please consult the Embassy of Japan/Consulate General in the country of which you are a national (regardless of whether you are currently residing in this country). Essay titles and deadlines vary between countries so you are strongly recommended to contact them before applying.
