The Embassy of Japan has received financial donations from a large number of people to assist those affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. As of 29 February 2012, the donations totalled £557,973.88 (* ).
The fund received by the Embassy is being sent via the Japanese Red Cross to the distribution committees of the local authorities of the affected areas so that it will reach the stricken people. Also, the British Red Cross has informed us that the amount raised by the organisation as of 10 January 2012 for the Japanese Earthquake Appeal is £14.1m.
When I visited Fukushima last month, I heard the donations from overseas have helped the victims greatly in rebuilding their lives. The people I met in Fukushima expressed deep gratitude for the support received from overseas.
We are very grateful to all the individuals and organisations involved for their generosity, as well as to the British Red Crosss effort. Meanwhile, the Embassy continues to accept contributions for this purpose.
Keiichi Hayashi
Ambassador of Japan
(*) As there are various ways of making contributions other than via the Embassy and through the British Red Cross, such as by direct donations to the Japanese Red Cross. The figure indicated here does not represent the total for contributions from the UK.
