I have the honour today to announce that we will provide an additional 500 million US dollars worth of assistance. Specifically, we will provide the Government of Pakistan with approximately 233 million US dollars worth of additional soft loans, for the rehabilitation of roads and bridges in rural areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province as well as for importing such goods as fertilisers and seeds required for reconstruction following the flood.
Furthermore, we will provide approximately 267 million US dollars worth of assistance for the (humanitarian/early-recovery) work of international organisations, subject to Diet approval. Put together, Japans assistance related to the flood will amount to approximately 568 million US dollars.
On 9 November, Prime Minister Naoto Kan of Japan talked with President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan to reassure President Zardari that Japan would support Pakistan in its efforts to combat terrorism and in the further implementation of the countrys economic reforms under his leadership.
In the wake of the flood disaster which affected a large part of Pakistan during the summer this year, Japan has sent six manned helicopters from its Self Defense Force and two batches of medical teams to Punjab Province, both as Japan Disaster Relief Teams.
