Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime’s message on the UK’s Accession to the CPTPP (Signing of the Protocol of the UK’s Accession)

2023/7/16
On 16 July, on the occasion of the CPTPP Commission meeting held in New Zealand, ministers from the CPTPP parties and the United Kingdom, including Mr GOTO Shigeyuki, Minister in charge of Economic Revitalization for Japan, and The Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch MP, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, signed the Protocol of the UK’s Accession and associated documents.

The UK's accession to the CPTPP will bolster our collective efforts in promoting a free and fair, rules-based trading system and economic order, not only in the Indo-Pacific region, but also on a global scale. As Japan has been leading the process of the UK’s accession as the chair of the Accession Working Group, I am delighted and proud that the vigorous efforts of all the countries involved, including the UK, have come to fruition with this signing.

I trust that the procedures towards the early entry into force of the UK’s accession protocol in both the UK and the CPTPP member countries will progress smoothly.
