Japanese Garden Community Picnic

2019/4/16

Japanese Garden Community Picnic
Saturday 11 May, Hammersmith Park
12:00-17:00

The Japanese Garden in Hammersmith Park is one of Hammersmith’s special connections to Japan, as it was created as part of the 1910 Japanese-British Exhibition. To celebrate the uniqueness of the park, the Japan Society and the Embassy of Japan are hosting a community picnic, to which all are invited!

Japanese sweets, packaged and baked goods will be available to purchase on the day, and we encourage you to pack a picnic and join us for an afternoon of family friendly fun. We’ll have a range of activities for all ages, and the much loved taiko drums will be returning to the park this year!

Music and Performances

The sound of the mighty taiko drum will fill the garden as performances from Thames Taiko take place throughout the afternoon. There’ll also be an eclectic offering of other performances, including music and dance, on our open mic stage all afternoon. If you are interesting in performing, please see details here.

Activities

ORIGAMI || CALLIGRAPHY || HAIKU WRITING || TREASURE TRAIL
Try your hand at some Japanese calligraphy, or learn how to write a beautiful Haiku poem – there are prizes to be won for the best Haiku! Children will love folding origami animals, or hunting around the park for hidden secrets to complete the treasure trail! There’s fun to be had for the whole family.

Exhibitions and Special Events

Bonsai Kai will be showing us the art of Japanese bonsai, with stunning trees by their members on display. The Japanese Garden Society and Friends of the Japanese Garden in Hammersmith Park will also be participating, with information on the history of the garden and more.
