2019/8/15
On 18 June 2019, Professor Hiroshi Oda of University College London (UCL) was awarded the Ambassador’s Commendation for his distinguished contribution to friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and the United Kingdom in the field of law.
Professor Oda held the chair of Russian Law in the University in Tokyo before moving to London. He was appointed as Sir Ernest Satow Professor of Japanese Law at UCL in 1990. His publications include Japanese Law, now in its third edition, Russian Commercial Law and Russian Law. These works have significantly contributed to a greater understanding of Japanese and Russian law, as well as to the comparative analysis and improvement of Japanese law. Alongside these excellent academic achievements, Professor Oda has been practicing law in Japan and the UK as a leading expert on Russian law. He has also been active in the area of dispute settlement involving cross-border litigation and arbitration.
In 2018, Professor Oda launched the Sir Ernest Satow Centre for Japanese Law at UCL. The purpose of the centre is to conduct comparative study of Japanese law and to promote ties between UCL and Japanese universities through student exchange and research collaboration. The centre looks set to provide an ideal setting for further strengthening the relationship between the Japanese and British legal communities.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Tsuruoka delivered a congratulatory speech and conferred the commendation upon Professor Oda. Professor Oda thanked the Ambassador and paid tribute to the members of the UCL who have been working with him. He stressed the importance of resisting parochialism and anti-intellectualism.
