Ambassador’s Commendation - Mr Kenji Sakatsugi

2020/1/29

On 25 October 2019, Mr Kenji Sakatsugi was awarded the Ambassador’s Commendation for his contribution to the promotion of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the UK through his activities as a City of London Guide.

Mr Sakatsugi became a member of the City of London Guide Lecturers Association and an Official Guide to the City of London in 2010, when he started providing tours of the City to Japanese visitors each weekend whilst working full time as a banker. He also contributed to furthering Japanese people’s understanding of London’s history and culture through other channels, for example by giving numerous lectures at Nippon Club and Japan Society. By the time of his commendation in October 2019, Mr Sakatsugi had also contributed over 150 articles on London’s history to News Digest, a free magazine for the Japanese community in the capital. Mr Sakatsugi carried out all these activities on a voluntary basis.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Tsuruoka gave a congratulatory speech highlighting Mr Sakatsugi’s achievements before conferring the commendation. Mr Sakatsugi thanked the Ambassador, and emphasised the important role that the study of history and culture has to play in furthering international exchange and understanding.
