Letters of condolence by Prime Minister SUGA Yoshihide and Minister for Foreign Affairs MOTEGI Toshimitsu on the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

On 9 April 2021, upon the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh earlier on the day, Prime Minister SUGA Yoshihide sent a letter of condolence to The Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, while Mr MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, sent a letter of condolence to The Rt Hon Dominic Raab MP, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs and First Secretary of State of the United Kingdom. His Excellency Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime also expressed his condolences to Prime Minister Johnson and Secretary Raab. The provisional translation of the contents of the letters are as follows:

1. Letter of condolence by Prime Minister SUGA Yoshihide addressed to The Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (provisional translation)

Dear Prime Minister Johnson,

It is with deep sadness that I have learned of the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. On behalf of the Government and people of Japan, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the Government and the people of the United Kingdom.

His Royal Highness visited Japan seven times, including as a State Guest with Her Majesty The Queen in 1975. I would like to pay tribute to him for not only further strengthening the historic friendship between the Royal Family and the Japanese Imperial Household but also for his great contribution to promoting mutual understanding between the peoples of Japan and the United Kingdom.

May I emphasise the great esteem with which I will always remember His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

2. Letter of condolence by Mr MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan The Rt Hon Dominic Raab MP, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs and First Secretary of State of the United Kingdom (provisional translation)

Dear Secretary Raab,

It is with deep sadness that I have been informed of the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. My deepest condolences go to the Royal Family, the Government and the people of the United Kingdom.

His Royal Highness visited Japan seven times, including as a State Guest with Her Majesty The Queen in 1975. The longstanding relationship between the Japanese Imperial Household and the Royal Family is a cornerstone of the friendship between our two countries. I would also like to express my deepest respect for His Highness' support for a wide range of activities in the fields of science and technology, nature conservation, sport and engineering.

May I hereby emphasise the great esteem with which I will always remember His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
