On 4 February, Ambassador and Madame Hayashi attended a sakura (cherry blossom) tree planting ceremony held at Chartwell.

The ceremony was attended by Ms Jennie Churchill, great-granddaughter of Sir Winston Churchill, and community leaders of the region as well as members of The Sakura Cherry Tree Committee.

Ambassador Hayashi remarked that it was an honour to witness the planting of the trees, another symbol of the amicable ties, which would remain at that outstanding site for years to come, and he expressed his gratitude to those involved in the project.

He also mentioned an episode in which Mr YOSHIDA Shigeru, then-Japanese Prime minister, had bestowed the gift of a drawing of Mt Fuji, by a leading Japanese painter, YASUDA Yukihiko, upon Sir Winston Churchill. He observed that the foundation of the ties had been built through exchanges between people, and declared his wish to deepen the two countries’ friendship still further.
