On 23 February, Ambassador and Madame Hayashi hosted an event on the occasion His Majesty the Emperor’s Birthday. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the event was held on a significantly smaller scale compared to normal years, but was nonetheless attended by British Government officials, including several cabinet secretaries and ministers, Members of Parliament, members of judiciary, Ambassadors and High Commissioners of the diplomatic corps.

The event began with a performance of the British and Japanese national anthems by the Royal Air Force Salon Orchestra, followed by an address by Ambassador Hayashi. He congratulated His Majesty the Emperor on his 62nd birthday and reflected on the past year, which marked great strides within security and defence cooperation, including the UK’s Carrier Strike Group's visit to Japan, the continued development of economic ties through the Japan-UK EPA coming into effect, and cultural exchanges including “The Japan-UK Season of Culture”. Furthermore, he mentioned that the Japanese Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers each visited the UK twice on the occasion of G7 and COP26 meetings last year and that he looked forward to the cooperation and support of the attendants in further expanding and deepening the bilateral relationship this year, which marks the 120th anniversary of the Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Alliance.

The Rt. Hon. Amanda Milling, Minister for Asia and the Middle East also made a remark to congratulate the birthday of His Majesty the Emperor. In the remark, she praised the success of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, which brought people from around the world together even in the face of the COVID19 pandemic last year. She also emphasised the progress of multilateral co-operation through the G7 and UK-Japan cooperation on global issues such as climate change, including Prime Minister Kishida’s attendance at COP26, as well as the UK's commitment to the Indo-Pacific region, both economically and in terms of security. In conclusion, she expressed her wish to further develop the UK-Japan relationship.

Based on the exchange of views at this event, the Embassy is committed to furthering the Japan-UK relationship in 2022.
