2022/6/7
On 7 June, Ambassador and Madame Hayashi attended the opening event of the exhibition “ASH, EMBER, FLAME: a Japanese Kiln in Oxford” held at Harris Manchester College, Oxford. The exhibition displays pieces that had been made in Japanese anagama kilns built by the University of Oxford in Wytham Wood and was originally held at the Embassy of Japan in the UK and transferred to be exhibited at the College.
Ambassador and Madame Hayashi visited the site of the kilns of the University of Oxford, followed by the opening of the exhibition and the High Table Dinner afterwards. The event was attended by many guests including Professor Jane Shaw, Principal of Harris Manchester College, Oxford, and Dr Robin Wilson, Director of the Oxford University Kilns Project.
At the opening event, Ambassador Hayashi stated that the project had contributed not only to introducing Japan’s traditional firing skills and its natural beauty to the British people but also to connecting potters between Japan and the UK.
