Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) ships visit the UK
2022/6/25
Two Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) vessels recently visited the UK, as follows:
Training Vessel JS Kashima: 22-25 June, HMS Belfast, London
Training Vessel JS Shimakaze: 21-25 June, HMNB Portsmouth
The visit of the two vessels symbolises a new level of defence cooperation between Japan and the UK, which has a long and proud history and evolved to the next stage last year with the visit to Japan of the UK Carrier Strike Group (CSG21).
This visit, in reciprocation for the CSG21’s visit to Japan, included joint exercises between the JMSDF and the Royal Navy, exchanges with the Royal Navy aircraft carriers Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales and security discussions with the Royal Navy as well as exchanges with young officers, memorial services for the war dead and musical performances.
Ambassador Hayashi welcomed Kashima as she passed under Tower Bridge, and then gave a media interview on board the ship together with Rear Admiral Komuta, Commander of the Training Squadron. He also hosted a reception on board HMS Belfast to celebrate the port call and the Self-Defence Forces Day. The reception included an opening address by Rear Admiral Moorhouse, Commander of CSG21, and discussions with a number of people involved in Japan-UK defence cooperation.
This year marks the 120th anniversary of the conclusion of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. Japan-UK defence cooperation contributes not only to the security of Japan but to ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and the international community as well as addressing global challenges.
