Japanese Government honours Lady Arden of Heswall (Mary Howarth Arden)

On Thursday 1 September 2022, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime bestowed upon Lady Arden of Heswall (Mary Howarth Arden) the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star at a ceremony held at the Ambassador's residence.
As a justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, Lady Arden has contributed to strengthening the relationship and promoting mutual understanding in the field of justice between the United Kingdom and Japan.
Ambassador Hayashi paid tribute to Lady Arden’s achievements to date, and expressed his wish for continued support towards strengthening the Japan-UK relationship in the judicial field.
Chief Justice TOKURA Saburo, the Supereme Court of Japan, sent a video-message to celebrate the conferment of the Order and conveyed his gratitude for Lady Arden’s significant contributions.
In the presence of Lord Reed, President of the Supreme Court of the UK and her former colleagues and family, Lady Arden conveyed her gratitude to those who had supported her in her activities over the years. Mentioning her fond memories of Japan and shared values between Japan and the UK, she also said the Japan-UK relationship in the judicial field is increasingly important and expressed her hope for its enhancement.
