I would like to express my profound sorrow and sincerest condolences on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Her Majesty was a great monarch who guided and encouraged the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth for seventy years. Her unwavering dedication to global peace and prosperity deeply impressed people around the world. I would like to express my sincerest respect and gratitude for Her Majesty’s numerous achievements.

In relation to Japan, Her Majesty The Queen always gave warm attention to the relationship between our two countries and to the ties between the British Royal Family and the Japanese Imperial Family. I am thoroughly grateful to Her Majesty for the heart-warming hospitality and kindness extended to me while I studied in the United Kingdom as well as when I visited the country subsequently.

I, together with the Empress, also sincerely appreciate the consideration of Her Majesty The Queen for inviting us to the United Kingdom for the first visit abroad after my accession to the throne.

Amid the abundant grief of the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, as well as that of many people around the world, I would like to offer once again my heartfelt prayers for the repose of Her Majesty.
