Ms Rebecca Salter
On 12 October 2022, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime awarded the Foreign Minister’s Commendation to Ms Rebecca Salter, President of Royal Academy of Arts.

Ms Salter was elected as the first female President of the Royal Academy and takes leadership in the UK’s art community. After studying Japanese woodblock prints in Kyoto, she has worked and exhibited in Japan and the UK, as well as internationally. She also taught Japanese woodblock prints at the University of the Arts London and the Royal Academy of Arts. Thereby she has made a great contribution to promoting art and cultural exchange between Japan and the UK.

In 2022, she organised an exhibition on Kawanabe Kyosai at the RA, providing opportunities for people in the UK to experience not necessarily well-known Japanese art.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Hayashi paid tribute to Ms Salter's great contribution to the artistic and cultural exchange between Japan and the UK and expressed his wish to continue working together to promote Japanese culture and friendly relations between the two countries. In response, Ms Salter recalled her memories and experiences with Japanese people and said that she was very honoured to receive this commendation and thanked all those who had supported her.
