On 26 October, Ambassador Hayashi attended a welcome & farewell reception at Japan House London.

The reception was held to honour the achievements of Mr Michael Houlihan, who was stepping down as the first Director General of Japan House London, and to introduce Mr Sam Thorne, who had succeeded to the position on 17 October.

At the reception, Ambassador Hayashi noted that, thanks to Mr Houlihan's outstanding leadership and deep understanding of Japan, in just four years Japan House London had made impressive progress and had been able to convey the appeal of Japanese culture to many people. Mr Houlihan recalled that, during his tenure, he had placed great importance on presenting an authentic image of Japan and its regional diversity, and stated that he was honoured to be involved in the Japan House project, which had taught him a great deal.

After a welcoming remark by Mr NAKAJIMA Yuichiro, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Japan House London Limited, new Director General Thorne stated that, in these uncertain times, culture was more important than ever, and that he was very much looking forward to being involved in cultural diplomacy with the Japan House London project.
