On 12 November, Ambassador and Madame Hayashi attended the Oku Memorial Trophy rugby matches held at the Richmond Athletic Ground. Afterwards they watched the encounter between England and Japan at Twickenham Stadium.

The Oku Memorial Trophy is an annual event in memory of Ambassador OKU Katsuhiko, who was shot and killed in Iraq on 29 November 2003, during his tenure at the Japanese Embassy in the UK. Since 2004 Mr Reg Clarke, Ambassador Oku’s teammate at Oxford University Rugby Club, has been organising the Trophy matches every year. This year, the occasion was arranged to coincide with the England vs Japan match.

In his remarks, Ambassador Hayashi mentioned that Ambassador Oku's love of rugby, his unparalleled enthusiasm for deepening relations between Japan and the UK, and his dedication to international peace remained a source of inspiration for many young people. He also expressed his hope that the ties between the two countries would be further strengthened through sports, including such initiatives as the Oku Trophy and the match bringing together England and Japan.
